Our Volunteer Tutors

If you are interested in volunteering with People, Words & Change, please contact us. One of our counsellors will answer your questions and give you more information before you apply.

Training

If your application is accepted, we will begin looking for a student for you, based on compatibility of schedule, geographic location and other preferences you both may have. Once we have a tentative match in mind for you, you will be invited to attend a required 2-hour tutor orientation session, either in the daytime or evening. We also offer tutor workshops several times a year, where tutors can learn about and discuss various tutoring strategies and share ideas with other tutors and with our Education Counsellors.

Matches

Once you have completed the orientation session, you will be invited to meet with your Education Counsellor to discuss your student's Training Plan, tutoring strategies and look at resources. Your Education Counsellor will then arrange a time when you can meet your student for the first time. At this meeting, you and your student will decide on a suitable time and location for your tutoring sessions, exchange contact information and set up your first session.

Tutors and learners meet once a week for two hours. As well, in most cases, tutors assign their students approximately two hours of homework assignments. This is important in order for the student to make progress from a once-a-week, 2-hour tutoring session.

Matches usually meet in a neutral place. Many meet at PWC, but some meet in a branch of the Ottawa Public Library, a community centre or any other place that is suitable for both the tutor and student. Every effort is made to match tutors and learners who live within a reasonable travelling distance of each other.

There can sometimes be a wait-time for students in certain areas of the city. The more flexible you can be about the times you have available for tutoring, or the areas you might be able to go, the sooner we can find a student for you.
