PWC’s 13th Annual Power of Words Breakfast

September 14, 2022 by PWCUpdates

On Thursday, September 8, PWC held its 13th annual Power of Words Breakfast. This year’s event was held in person and we were excited to see everyone again! Rogers Television covered the event and it you can watch it here on YouTube!

Terry Marcotte returned as emcee extraordinaire! Local musical talent Margot Lange and Michael McCulloch kicked off the morning with their lovely performance of I Believe, followed by Hélène Cayer delivering the land acknowledgement of our event taking place on unceded Algonquin territory.

The Power of Words Breakfast is held every year to celebrate our learners and their achievements, and we were honoured to have four current learners share their stories with us this year. This part of our event always inspires us to remember why we do what we do. Our keynote speaker was Olympic silver medallist, author, and inspirational speaker Elizabeth Manley. Her talk about her personal journey with its pitfalls and successes was truly inspiring! Elizabeth brought her Olympic silver medal and passed it around the room. She told the learners that that medal was for them and reminded our learners to always keep going, to always be themselves, and to never let anyone tell them that they can’t succeed. Margaret Macdonald, President of the PWC Board of Directors, spoke about what literacy and PWC mean to her, and Executive Director Dee Sullivan concluded the event with the launch of our annual book draw and the announcements of our special partnership with Books on Beechwood and Perfect Books. Both bookstores generously donated 10% of all sales on September 8 to celebrate International Literacy Day!

PWC would like to express our gratitude to the sponsors of the 2022 Power of Words Breakfast!
